Quirky Holiday Letters

Sending out a letter of family news and photos around the December holidays is a yearly tradition for many families. My family is no exception, and my Mom was usually (always?) the one in the family to write ours. It would typically consist of one typed page and maybe a photo tucked in too. Well-written, of course, but maybe after many years it becomes a tad predictable?A few years ago I decided that it would be fun to spice the traditional letter with some new concepts and designs. We have since collaborated on a ‘zine-style write-up with “news” stories and headlines, and a “photo album” style letter that included Polaroid pics with hand-written captions splashed around the text. Most recently we sent a “holiday quiz” with multiple-choice questions and photo ID’s testing your knowledge of our activities and whereabouts, and a “wiki-leaks” themed letter with leaked memos and photos documenting our year, and the "Roose Yearly" (a take on "US Weekly" magazine). I’m sure that some recipients find these slightly odd, but I hope that for most they are a welcome, humorous break from the typical cards. I have since designed a custom card for a friend’s family as well, and I hope to do more in the future. See them all here.
