Exhibit Graphic Redesign

CLIENT: Museum of Science, Boston

CHALLENGE: I worked with an exhibit team to refurbish the Science in the Park exhibit, a classic and well-loved exhibit at the Museum. Redesigning the graphics to be more attractive and clear was a large part of the refurbishment plan. The original concept behind the exhibit is that kids (and adults) can learn about physics concepts by doing park activities. While the concept is a good one, it didn’t work well in the exhibit because the instructions and science explanations were too text heavy and unclear. The labels needed to more approachable, attractive, and easier to read.

DESIGN STRATEGY: I chose to use pictograms (inspired by street signage and international symbols) of people to show what they were supposed to do at each exhibit.I worked with an exhibit developer (who wrote the text for the labels) to combine words and images in a way that made the instructions really easy to follow. By using both, people with different learning styles can choose one or the other. I used a similar simplified illustration style on the labels explaining the physics.
