CHALLENGE & STRATEGY: When Michael asked me to design a custom disc for their wedding, he said that he had “mountains, the moon and a ring of stars” in mind, to coordinate with their theme of a full moon wedding in Boulder, Colorado. To be honest, the first thing that came to mind when he said that was the Paramount Pictures logo. They obviously didn’t want a rip-off of the Paramount logo as the design, so I had to think about it a little more. A circular area is a tough space for a lot of designs, if you end up cramming a rectangular design into a circle it can look awkward.I remembered seeing a type of photo-collage called a “planetoid”, which is basically a panorama landscape wrapped around a circle so that it looks like a little planet. I decided to do an illustration interpretation of this idea, using the mountains, lakes, rivers and trees of the Boulder landscape, as well as the full moon, stars, and one shooting star. It fits nicely in the circular area of the disc and also is a metaphor for the world that they are creating with their marriage.
